New Alternative Bands Introduced at House of Blues Show

I recently attended a concert for The 1975 a band I have been listening to since their album with 39 tracks was released last summer. The 1975’s performance was surreal but I was more surprised by the quality of the opening acts; SIR SLY and Bad Suns. Both bands will surely become more famous because of the newly rising alternative rock music style which they have already perfected. Although I only knew a select few songs from the set list of both acts they carried the audience’s attention throughout their entire show. SIR SLY’s performance was interesting because the band themselves were feeling the beat of their own music and the energy in the room was electrifying. I was more familiar with Bad Suns but even to the people in the crowd who were strangers to the bands were having a good time. I highly recommend looking into both artists and other groups of their genre. (Also I apologize I don’t have any photos from SIR SLY’s performance.)

Mocking Your Sins: Indigenous Laughter as Healing

Bluestockings Magazine

I remember looking out the window of my mother’s car as she drove me home after school. I remember seeing a bumper sticker that read, “I was Indian before it was cool,” on a curiously pristine 1982 black Datsun with the tacky neon decal scribbles on the side. I instantly imagined the driver  riding a zoomorphic horse version of his awesome truck. No saddle. Stereotypically ribbon-like Native hair blowing in the wind. The fantasy Native is easy for anyone to imagine.

And despite being a rather naive 14 years old, I had an inkling of the kind of person the sticker referred to. Having grown up closer to a reservation than a college town (i.e., hundreds of miles away from anyone who’d wear a headdress for fun), I knew it had to be an earthy variety of white person almost foreign to me. I’d occasionally see…

You’re Wrong: An F.A.Q.

Proper Discord

Q. Am I really wrong?

Yes

Q. Are you sure?

Absolutely

Q. Can you prove that I’m wrong?

Yes, but, you’ll have to agree in advance what proof looks like, otherwise you could just move the goalposts after the game.

Q. How come I have so much evidence that I’m right?

That’s confirmation bias. Your brain carefully files away all the reasons you might be right, and disregards all the reasons you might be wrong.

Q. How come so many people agree with me?

They’re wrong too.

Q. They can’t all be wrong, can they?

Most people are wrong about most things most of the time. If there’s one remarkable discovery to be made in the study of science, religion and philosophy, it’s that being wrong about almost everything does people so little harm. The fact that every scientific discovery since the stone age has only doubled our life expectancy…

#YesAllWomen

Because all women have walked to their car in the dark, keys clutched tight in hand, one poking out between two fingers.

Because when I go out to bars or clubs, I have to think about whether what I’m wearing is too suggestive, instead of putting on whatever I please.

Because I feel the need to apologize when I’m not wearing makeup or my hair hasn’t been washed, or when I’m generally looking anything other than flawless.

Because there was nothing I could do about the man who touched me inappropriately in the middle of Gillette Stadium as I waited for my then-boyfriend to come out of the bathroom. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STADIUM.

Because there was also nothing I could do when a man touched me inappropriately in the middle of a crowded street, his arm around his girlfriend. Because retaliating in the way I wanted to…

I’ve had been waiting for this album ever since hearing the February 2012 when I first heard “R U Mine” and instantly fell back in love with The Arctic Monkeys after being disappointed with their previous album “Suck It  and See”.

AM is the fifth studio album by The Arctic Monkeys and in my personal experience bands don’t seem to keep up the same standard after their third album but The Arctic Monkeys are the exception! With the album being influenced by several genres but the one that…
